Flip Flops

Tuesday, August 5th, 2008

I want to talk about flip flops because I need something flippant to occupy my mind.

I own three pairs of flip flops: One- a very cozy micro fleece with memory foam sole that I wear as my house slippers.  Two- two pairs of kitten heeled ginham materialed flip flops in blue and red. I wear them on casual summer days with a pair of jeans and such. I do not take them seriously as shoes.

While on an errand in to downtown today I was shocked at all the flip flops that crossed my path. Almost everyone was wearing flip flops. Business men and women, teens enjoying their urban summer, vendors, tourists and even several fashionistas! Admittedly the latter on this list broke my heart the most. How can one wear CoCo Chanel with a pair of flip flops?! This is a sacrilege.

When did flip flops become acceptable in everyday outside of the house wear and in fashion? This makes no sense to me. I will not accept this as fact, I simply cannot. For starters, flip flops are not shoes- they offer no support. I fear the future of back pain the flip flop aficionados will face. They get dirty and your feet get dirty. They are annoying in their clip clop sound off. More often than not- they are plastic, and not a good quality of plastic either. And now, because it appears everyone only wears flip flops- they can cost between 8 to 100 dollars a pair!

One should be able to obtain a pair of flip flops for under a few dollars to wear to the pool or the beach- not as a standard in ones wardrobe. We can do better than this people- we can and we should!
